Basics of parametric modelling for geotechnics with Grasshopper (March-April 2025)

Parametric modeling is the next step in the evolution of computer-aided design and an imperative for BIM design.

Do you want to efficiently model retaining walls and rock bolts by using parametric modelling in your daily work with geotechnics or engineering geology? Join our 4-session course and learn how Grasshopper can be used to design typical geotechnical structures. No prior experience is required!

Content

Basics of Rhino and Grasshopper. Setting up Grasshopper script; input data, data trees, data processing, output data and export. Geotechnical design examples; retaining walls and rock bolting. Python in Grasshopper. Export to IFC.

The course is split into 5 modules. The course employs a hands-on approach where students tackle small tasks, receive feedback and solutions through teacher-led discussions, and progressively build toward creating the final product.

  1. Basics of Rhino and Grasshopper
  2. Creating geotechnical geometries
  3. Rock bolt example
  4. Sheet pile and as-build example
  5. Working with IFC
