Our societal mission

Our societal mission is to develop the geosciences and produce the knowledge basis to build, live and travel on safe ground. We solve this by combining research and consulting hand-in-hand and being a bridge-builder between academia, industry and the public sector.

We shall perform and promote research, development
and innovation in engineering geosciences.

We shall create results that are relevant for,
and used by society.

We shall provide professional development of our
employees, and contribute to education through
cooperation with the university sector.

Since the beginning of the 1950s, it has been a fulcrum of research and consultancy within engineering geosciences. Our employees are among the foremost experts in their respective fields, and since its establishment, NGI has been a beacon in geotechnical research and development.

Since 1972 NGI has assumed national responsibility for developing specialist expertise in avalanche risk assessment. NGI led the International Centre for Geohazards (ICG) from 2002 until its closure in 2012. This was one of Norway's first centers of excellence, appointed by the Research Council of Norway. International experts and researchers from abroad are always at NGI on scholarships and exchange visits.

The objects of NGI

The objectives of NGI were formulated upon its establishment in 1953 and comprised three main points:

  1. National center for geotechnical research and development.
Research and development within geotechnics and associated disciplines result in new expertise, methods, and technology.

  2. Develop knowledge and technology to be adopted.
Our results shall be relevant to the market and shall be put into use.

  3. Professional development of employees and assistance with further education. Continuous skills development among our employees and interaction with the most important Norwegian academic communities within our specialized fields are significant parts of our operation.
