Microplastics
Microplastics are plastics smaller than 5 mm. Microplastics in nature come either from the emission of tiny plastic particles (e.g. in toothpaste, cleaning detergent) or from larger plastic particles that break down into smaller ones. Plastic in nature is a major environmental problem, partly because it is taken up by biota.
NGI carries out both research and advisory projects that deal with problems related to microplastics. We have laboratory facilities where we can look at the number of microplastics in samples and determine which type of plastic the samples contain. In the lab, we analyzed biological samples (e.g. brush land) and samples of sediments, sludge, and water.
NGI also works on projects that aim to reduce plastic and microplastic emissions into nature. NGI also works actively with the authorities to focus on less plastic emissions and reducing dangerous additives in plastic. NGI has also contributed to discussions about the global plastics agreement.
