New double-track: Sandbukta–Moss–Såstad

Since 2019, NGI has served as consulting engineers in geotechnics, responsible for ground investigations, laboratory testing, instrumentation/monitoring as well as design. As extensive ground investigations during the autumn 2019 and spring 2020 revealed large quantities of quick clay and very low stability in downtown Moss, Bane NOR decided in spring 2022 to change the project execution in the city centre to a client-managed contract. At the same time, NGI was engaged as Bane NOR’s geotechnical advisor, responsible for preparatory work and area stability in central Moss.

Over the past few years, NGI has contributed with extensive design of several measures to ensure sufficient stability in central Moss. These measures are necessary regardless of the railway development, and the focus of the assessments has been to find solutions that minimize the risk of quick clay slides for all future.

This has gone hand-in-hand with very detailed follow-up of construction work, including monitoring of the many instrumented measurement points for pore pressure and deformation, and comparison with calculated values. The project has also sparked research and innovation, including the launch of a PhD candidate from NGI in 2024.
